Proper Job Chagford’s community re-use and recycling center is expanding with a new Uptown store. The not-for-profit cooperative enterprise is due to take on the lease of the old Post Office in the centre of Chagford. The Uptown store will stock a selection of good quality, affordable pre-loved items such as clothing, furniture, books and homewares. There will also be a range of reclaimed and upcycled items from local fixers and makers.
Proper Job is a project set up by the community for the community. Launched in 1995 by a group of environmentally conscious Chagfordians who started a composting project at the allotments, the project has gone from strength to strength. The Courtyard Café and Shop in Chagford Square is also part of the Proper Job cooperative and has helped to fund the project for 22 years. The Proper Job cooperative employs 20 local people and with the new premises opening they will be looking for two new employees.
In the year 2000 Proper Job opened the Resource Centre half a mile outside Chagford opposite Market Field. Today local people bring reusable and recyclable items such as clothing, tools, books and furniture, and the ‘PJ team’ work to put them to good use by sorting, fixing and selling them at affordable prices, thus reducing landfill.
The Resource Centre reuses and recycles over two tonnes of materials a week. Proper Job aims to reduce waste, create jobs and volunteering opportunities, educate people about repairing, re-using and recycling and to support people to live a more environmentally friendly life style.
The new Uptown store aims to make Proper Job more accessible to the public and will help to promote a variety of events and workshops. As a not for profit enterprise, any profits made will go towards achieving PJ’s environmental and social goals and supporting the local community.
Uptown is due to open before Christmas, just in time for you to purchase your ethical stocking fillers!
