Proper Job Resource Centre Celebrates 30 Years of Environmental Action and Community Impact

The Proper Job Resource Centre, one of Devon’s pioneering environmental charities, proudly marks its 30th anniversary—celebrating three decades of championing sustainability, reducing waste, and empowering communities through grassroots action.

From its humble beginnings in 1993 as a small community composting initiative, Proper Job became a registered co-operative in 1995 and has grown into a vital organisation. Now a registered charity, it not only diverts waste from landfill but also leads in environmental education, skills training, and community empowerment. Staff, volunteers, and supporters are taking this milestone year to reflect on its journey and look ahead to a sustainable future.

A Story of Grassroots Success

Founded in Chagford, West Devon, Proper Job began with a simple idea: give new life to unwanted items and help people live more sustainably. What started as a composting initiative evolved into a full-scale resource centre embracing the ethos of “reduce, reuse, recycle”—long before sustainability became mainstream.

Its early success was made possible by National Lottery funding, which enabled the purchase of the current Resource Centre site. Further inspiration came through the Women Mean Business course run by the local co-operative development agency attended by co-founder Jo Hodges, helping shape the organisation’s direction with business planning support.

Today, Proper Job operates a busy resource centre, the stylish Uptown reuse boutique, offers repair and upcycling workshops, hosts educational events, and serves as a vibrant hub for sustainable living. Its work has saved countless tonnes of waste from landfill and inspired a culture of reuse in the community.

“Celebrating 30 years is not just about time passed,” says Alison Sallis, CEO of Proper Job. “It’s about recognising the passion and dedication that have made this project what it is. It’s a testament to the power of local action and shared values.”

Community at the Heart

Proper Job’s success is deeply rooted in community. Over the years, thousands have donated, shopped second-hand, attended workshops, or simply connected with others through the centre. The charity has also created volunteering and employment opportunities, helping many develop confidence and skills.

“There should be no such thing as ‘Waste’ and no place called ‘Away’ to put it. We should have ‘Resources’ that can be endlessly recycled, reused, repaired, and upcycled. We should refuse to purchase anything that cannot be part of our circular economy. This vision shaped the early days of Proper Job, and we firmly believed that every community should embrace this concept and create their own ‘Proper Job’ site.” – Nicky Scott, Co-Founder.

In today’s cost-of-living crisis, Proper Job’s role is more crucial than ever, providing affordable goods, sustainable living skills, and fostering a strong sense of community resilience in West Devon.

Looking ahead, Proper Job is focused on growing its impact. Plans for 2025 and beyond include enhancing outreach, replicating its repair shop model in nearby towns, increasing volunteer recruitment, and building regional partnerships.

To support these efforts, PJ is launching a 30th Anniversary Fundraising Campaign, encouraging people to “Give £30 for 30 Years.” This initiative aims to ensure the charity’s future during financially challenging times.
